Great article - sites like www.econtractorbids.com are going to get bigger and more successful - and used by consumers. It will really help weed out the less accountable services in all areas.

Patty,
You brought up a great point. There are many homeowners out there that rip off contractors on a daily bases. This was actually one of the reasons I got out of the business. I had a lady take me for 10k and everyone was on my side, the inspector, the state board of licensing and so on. Yes I got a judgment against her, but it could be years before I collect any money, if I collect any at all.

I think there is a website out there that blacklist homeowners and I will find it for you, and post it here.

You said people need to be held accountable for their actions I agree... I work for a restoration company in Georgia and am at my whits end. There are plenty of websites for the consumers to go to and bad mouth contractors and not one for contractors to talk about the consumers. We do 95% of our work for insurance companies, we spend a considerable amount of time with estimates, getting floor people plumbers framers etc out to them. We'll do sometimes 15,000 worth of work for them. The insurance company will sometimes (seldom) send the payment directly to the insured with only their name on the check. The person cashes the check, spends the money and then tells us oh well I am filing bankruptcy. Now in the state of Georgia it is illigal to profit as a homeowner from a insurance claim. Explaining this to them is like teaching a 2 year old how to do algebra IMPOSSIBLE... We went out to collect money from a customer who had already been paid in full for our estimate for the work to be done and she had another contractor on the job, refused to speak with us and demanded we get off her property. My co-worker went to his truck called the number on the truck for the other contractor and explained what the homeowner did to us. He called us later and thanked us because after he spoke with us he told the homeowner that he needed payment then for the work he had done and she demanded that he get off her property too. Where can we go to warn other contractors about people like this??? Just wondering.
